1998 Avid Birders Big List We Did It!!! After a wonderful 11 months of birding, the Avids tallied their 700th 1998 ABA Area bird on November 28th. Bill Whan, and his very understanding traveling companion Laura, were able to add numbers 698, 699, and 700 on their vacation to sunny Florida. Thanks to Bill and Laura for a remarkable finish. Congrats certainly go out to all of the Avid Birders who braved the snow, sleet, rain, wind, fog, heat, deer, ditches, jackrabbits, and other hardships to make this a banner year. Way to go everyone! In a desperate attempt to add more birds to the big list, Bill Whan and I ventured to Southeast Arizona on December 28-31. We had three targets: Ruddy Ground-Dove, Rufous-backed Robin, and Rufous-capped Warbler. Unfortunately, we were only able to twitch one of those, the Rufous-backed Robin, bringing our 1998 total to 701. The Reasons and RulesBecause we found out that many people were taking birding trips to all corners of the ABA Area, we decided to do a collective year-list for 1998. Unfortunately, we didn't decide to do this until late February. The rules are simple. Anyone who participated in an Avid Birders field trip in 1997 is eligible to contribute birds for the big list in 1998. Birds have to be seen in 1998 within the boundaries of the ABA Area. Also, only birds currently on the ABA Checklist can be counted. Our goal is to collectively see 700 birds in 1998. If you are an Avid Birder and have seen any species not checked off on the following lists, please contact me to get those species added to the list. Recent Additions
