Delaware Preservation Parks Bird Quest

E-mail Print PDF

How many bird species can you spot in the Delaware County Preservation Parks’ preserves in 2009? Join Bird Quest and find out!

The Preservation Parks have instituted a Bird Quest program for ages 12-adult.  Participants use tracking lists to record the birds they spot in the parks.  At the end of the year, those who spot the most birds receive a reward.

To help you spot those birds, the Parks are hosting a series of Bird Quest programs through the winter and spring.  The programs are led by park naturalist and Columbus Audubon board member Jackie Bain.  See the Preservation Parks Bird Quest Web page for the schedule.  Bird Quest program dates also are on the Columbus Audubon events calendar.

Columbus Birder in Iraq

E-mail Print PDF
Well-known Columbus avid birder, Major Randel Rogers, is stationed in Iraq and is spreading the word about nature, and especially birds, there.  Randy has created a series of newsletters about nature in the Al-Asad area, and we are proud to bring them to you at Al-Asad au Natural.  The December 9 issue of the Columbus Dispatch features an article on his work: you can read it online at the Columbus Dispatch Web site.  After you learn about the fine work that Randy is doing, we hope that you will consider supporting his efforts.  Donations designated for Randy Rogers' Iraq Project can be sent to The Ohio Ornithological Society, P.O. Box 14051, Columbus, Ohio 43214.

Nature Walks Help with ADD

E-mail Print PDF

A new study finds that nature walks aid in concentration in children with attention deficit disorders (ADD and ADHD). The small study, conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, found that children who participate in nature walks for 20 minutes or more at least once a week are better able to concentrate than those who participate in walks in urban settings or do not walk at all.

Of course, some of us say that we knew it all along!

You can see a summary of the research on Tara Parker-Pope's "Well" blog at the New York Times site.
